Digital Libraries and Knowledge Management: Recent Trends and Developments

Abstract

Modern digital libraries and knowledge management are becoming critical components of today's information environment that is responsible for creating, organizing, preserving, and disseminating digital knowledge in all spheres of society including education, science, healthcare, governance, and business. This review paper will analyze current trends and development of digital libraries and specifically human-based studies that include participation of librarians, faculty, researchers, students, and other information specialists. The paper presents an overview of literature on the emergence of digital libraries, models of knowledge management, human-centered approaches, and new technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, semantic search, institutional repositories, research data management, cloud computing, and open access. The analysis shows that these technologies greatly facilitate information searching, knowledge dissemination, research collaboration, and organizational learning. Nevertheless, problems related to the digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital preservation, interoperability, data privacy, and digital literacy have a negative impact on implementation of these technologies.
